Top 20 foods to keep in your home

Healthy eaterMany men have a problem knowing which foods they should buy. I know this because I am one of them. I rarely stock my fridge or cupboards with healthy foods, as I don’t know what to buy. Because of this I am much more likely to eat snacks and junk food which is very bad for me.

Quite often I cannot be bothered to cook so I will buy fast food instead. This is a death sentence on a plate! You should try to keep your cupboards stocked with the correct things so you can always cook something that you like. Below you will find 20 simple food items that you must keep in your cupboard/fridge.

1. Water – yes water is something that is readily available from a tap, but you should keep a jug of water handy so that you can be ready. This will help you to keep the water cold.

2. Milk – You should use low fat milk wherever possible. You can use the milk on your porridge or cereal in the morning.

Eating apple3. Fruit – Fruit is extremely good for you. It is a lovely and healthy snack food to have around. You should try eating fruit instead of crisps.

4. Carrots – You can cut them up into sticks and eat them raw as a form of snack.

5. Peanut butter – This contains protein, but very little fat. You can put it on toast instead of using ordinary butter or margarine.

6. Eggs – Eggs make a great breakfast, just don’t fry them!

7. Yogurt – A pleasant refreshing snack to have on a hot day. Yogurt can be used to make a number of different drinks and can be used when cooking Indian food.

8. Butter – You need butter when baking, use it sparingly though!

9. Lemons – You can use them to make lemonade. Also if you eat seafood or fish often then you will definitely need some lemons.

10. Mayonnaise – This is high in fat so try not to use it every day. It can be great to use sometimes, however try to buy a reduced fat version.

11. Mustard – You can use this instead of mayonnaise on your sandwiches, as it has virtually no fat.

12. Cheese – You shouldn’t eat chunks of it, but can sprinkle it onto otherwise dull dishes to make them spring to life.

Drinking water13. Drink – You need to drink something, try drinking some fruit juice or water.

14. Ginger – Fresh ginger keeps for a long time in your fridge, you can store it in your icebox whole.

15. Bread – A sandwich can be a great lunch every now and then, however bread does have a lot of carbs so you should try not to go crazy. You should buy bread from your local bakery if possible as it will have less salt than in the mass-produced bread.

16. Cans – Canned vegetables and fruit can really help you out of a tricky spot if you have run out of fresh fruit and vegetables. Tinned food can be kept for a long time so you do not need to worry about it going out of date.

Eating cereal18. Rice - Rice is also extremely easy to cook.

19. Herbs and spices – You never know when you may need herbs and spices. You can try buying them in bulk as the small containers are often pretty expensive.
