Most countries have some form of food labelling, and that labelling is considered to be factual. So do you read the labels? Are you a conscientious shopper who reads everything that is in the packaging? Do you believe what you see there?
Most of what is written on the labels is written in such a way as to appear beneficial to you, and the truth is that this may not be so.
Many companies will try to sell their product by telling you that the ingredients are good for you, are low fat, and will help you in many ways; this is often not the truth.
Some manufacturers may even advertise that they use an exclusive patented formula, when in truth, the patent is given to them, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the ingredients are good for you.
This is not to say that labelling foods is not a good thing, there are advantages to knowing what is in a product, you just need to learn to distinguish the truth from the advertising.
A food producer is required to give you the actual ingredients on the label, and this is what you should be interested in, not in the advertising.
The label will tell you what is in the food, how many servings are in the package, and what chemicals are used to preserve the food.
The label will include what minerals, and vitamins the food contains, what the fat level is and how many calories it contains. This is the stuff you want to pay attention to, especially if you are trying to lose weight.
Foods that don’t include labels will be fresh produce and breads; and in these cases you should try to find organic produce or the freshest produce available. You want to stay away from foods that have been sprayed with pesticides as much as possible.
Remember what is on the front of a food package is going to be the advertising and what is on the back is going to be the actual food ingredients and the information you need to know.
