Although these diets do work they prevent you from eating many of your favourite foods. This can make it much more likely that you will get bored with your diet. You will no doubt consider giving up completely once you start to get bored. These diets are often quite unhealthy.

Over a prolonged period of time the strain on your kidneys can cause headaches, dizziness and dehydration.

You must make sure you discuss any diet with your doctor before you begin.

The best diet is a balanced diet. This will keep your body healthy while helping you to lose weight.

ExercisingFiction: Weight can be lost overnight and then you can return to normal

Fact: Most of the popular diets never last very long and are pretty unhealthy. For example diets that cut out dairy foods are certainly not healthy. The weight loss from these diets is unlikely to be permanent, as they do not provide your body with everything it needs.

If you exercise and avoid eating certain foods you can permanently lose weight. A well balanced diet is the most important part of any weight loss program.

Fiction: Reduced fat food means you can feel less guilty

Fact: Fruit is the only reduced fat food that is actually good for you. There are many other reduced fat foods which are ok for treats, you just shouldn’t go overboard. Many reduced fat foods have added sugar or flour meaning extra calories. You should make sure you read the ingredients properly to make sure you are not eating anything that is too bad for you.

Fact: Vegetarian diets can help you to lose weight and can also be good for you. However meat is not the culprit.

You can lose weight if the diet provides you with all of the calories your body need. You may cause health problems in the future if you are just eating foods just to fill yourself up.

Meat contains more calories than plants, so you would need to eat more to make up for it. It can be difficult to get enough of the vitamins needed so many vegetarians will have to take supplements.

Dairy productsFiction: Dairy products are bad

Fact: If you overindulge dairy products might make you fat, however they can be good for you if you are sensible. The French are living examples of this as they live long lives despite eating cheese and drinking wine like there is no tomorrow.

To keep your bones and teeth strong then dairy products are needed as they contain high levels of calcium. Calcium is important for adults and vital for children. Vitamin D is needed to regulate the levels of calcium and this is also found in dairy products.

There are hundreds of different varieties of dairy products available; you can opt for low fat or even no fat. You can even try soy or rice milk if you can’t eat dairy produce.

Butter contains high levels of fat and is the one dairy product you should be wary of. It is slightly better than margarine but you should still try to avoid it if possible.
