Can my diet affect my sleep?

InsomniaThe food you eat affects the way you act, the way you react, and the way you sleep. The way you eat affects your weight and your general well being. Some foods cause insomnia and others let you get a good nights rest.

A diet that is rich in leafy green vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, can make you sleep better. Adding a few herbs to the mix such as basil, dill and sage will make your sleeping habits even better.

Drinking milk before bed is another good way to get good nights sleep. Studies have found that an ingredient of milk tryptophan changes to serotonin in the body and this hormone helps us sleep. There are other foods that contain tryptophan too, and these are turkey, egg white, honey and tuna. These are all great foods if you want to get a good nights rest.

When you want to get a good nights rest then you need to avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine. These include such beverages as, colas, cocoa, coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks and some medicines.

Avoid foods rich in tyramine which is considered a brain stimulant and can keep you from sleeping. This substance is found in ham, sugar, tomatoes, bacon and cheese.

Peaceful sleepAvoid foods that are spicy because they are known to cause heartburn and indigestion.

When you have problems sleeping avoid alcoholic beverages because they will affect your normal sleep pattern.

Sleep patterns may also be changed because of the quantity you eat. You shouldn’t eat late at night because your body will not digest your food well. Instead start with a heavy breakfast and have your main meal in the early afternoon.

After you change you’re eating patterns and if you still feel you are not sleeping well, then you might want to consider taking vitamins. Both calcium and magnesium are great sleep aids. Foods that contain calcium are yoghurt, eggs, milk, tofu, broccoli, cheese, and sardines. Magnesium rich foods include cashews, beans, spinach, nuts and almonds. B12 and B6 vitamins are great sleep enhancers and can be found in foods like fish, wheat germ, cereals, brown rice, butter, soy products, soybeans and some plant milks.

Essentially if you want a good night’s sleep then you need to be careful with the foods you eat and especially the foods you eat at night. When you improve your diet you will get a good nights rest.
